Gary Carpenter is a Louisville-based artist whose work reflects a lifelong commitment to material exploration, formal intuition, and the quiet persistence of studio practice. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University Southeast, a Master of Arts from Ball State University, and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Cincinnati. In the 1980s, Carpenter lived and taught in Louisville, primarily at the
University of Louisville, where he taught foundation life drawing, color theory, and design. He later moved to Camden, New Jersey, where he taught art for 25 years before retiring and returning to Louisville.
Carpenter’s exhibition history includes solo and group exhibitions at Yvonne Rapp Gallery in Louisville, Atlantic Gallery in New York, and WheelHouse Art, where he has been featured in RE: Surface, AMALGAMATION, and his 2026 solo exhibition Out There, In Here at The Wine Room. In 1990, he received a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, an achievement that coincided with the beginning of his long teaching
career in Camden. Rather than separating his studio life from his years in the classroom, Carpenter describes Camden, his students, and his colleagues as forces that “seeped in,” shaping his discipline, humility, and sense of purpose.

“I work on a table in a small house of no distinguishable architectural style (unless shack counts as style). No music, no pets; just silence. Outside on my left, about a football field away is a four-lane highway loud with trucks, motorcycles, etc. Above are two jet trails, one commercial the other UPS.
On the walls I am surrounded by works by local artists bought in local galleries. I look at the works and remember great conversations. Whether it’s the artists or the galleries or the great people I’ve met at openings, it keeps me going. All my heroes are local.” -- Gary Carpenter, June 2026

Thursday, July 2 at 5:30 PM: Join us at WheelHouse Art, LOU for “Shawn Spills the Tea,” a special evening with featured artist Shawn Marshall.
This casual artist talk and demonstration invites guests into Shawn’s layered world of mixed media collage — a process shaped by her background in architecture, design, and visual arts education. Shawn will share insights into her art experiences and creative process, demonstrate how she builds composition, depth, and narrative through collage, and discuss the ideas behind the works featured in her exhibition, un-still.
Guests are invited to enjoy tea, light snacks, and an informal Q&A with the artist. Visitors may also have the opportunity to experiment with collage materials and try creating a small work of their own.
Whether you’re an art collector, practicing artist, collage enthusiast, or simply curious about Shawn’s work, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience un-still in a deeper and more interactive way before the exhibition closes on Friday, July 3.

Intentional Spatial Healing Welcome once again to WheelHouse Art’s Art by Volume, presented by the Wine Room by J. Bell Wine Co. It was my pleasure to wrap up this season with an interview featuring Natalie Officer of Natalie O Designs. As an interior designer, Natalie uses her expertise to curate spaces tailored to the needs of each individual client she works with. She also intentionally works with local artists and craftsfolk to add art, color, furniture and other design elements
that bring the vision to life. We spoke on the topics of space and its impact on how we live life, healing processes, artistic collaboration, family, and the imbalance of life.
WheelHouse Art’s Art by Volume, presented by the Wine Room by J. Bell Wine Co is available wherever you listen to your podcasts, and is also available on WheelHouse Art's YouTube Channel.

patrick ADAMS + teri DRYDEN: pieced TOGETHER, a two-person show featuring Lexington-based artist Patrick Adams and Louisville-based artist Teri Dryden.
This pairing brings together two artists whose abstract work is built through layers, revisions, fragments, and touch. Patrick Adams works primarily on canvas, using paint, scratched marks, and pieces of older painted surfaces to build compositions that feel both structured and open-ended. Teri Dryden works primarily with paper on panel, layering found and painted papers with drawing, scratching, and collage techniques to create richly textured surfaces.
Join us during the Lexington Gallery Hop Friday, July 17, 5:00 - 8:00pm
pieced TOGETHER is on view through July 25, 2026. WheelHouse Art, LEX | 500 W. Short Street, Lexington, KY 40507
